Gijon History

There are still architectural works to be seen from the times of Roman settlement and the 16th century when Gijon was an important seaport for the Catholic Monarchs.

Other buildings of interest include the 19th century City Hall building in the Plaza Mayor and in Jovellanos square there is the Museum of Gijón. This building, from the 16th century, contains mementos and paintings and sculpture by several artists. The famous chapel of Los Remedios is beside the museum.

Overlooking the marina at Plaza del Marqués, the Palace of Revillagigedo and the Collegiate Church of San Juan Bautista, these are home to modern art exhibitions. There is also the Barloja Museum which houses contemporary painting and sculpture and can be found in Calle de La Trinidad.

In the Campo Valdés quarter there is the Valdés palace, a 16th-century building, the church of San Pedro and the Roman baths.
